Kent Places and People: A Day Conference on Names

A biennial event organised by the Place-Names Committee of the Kent Archaeological Society, the Names conference is the main outreach vehicle for the committee, whose purpose is the promotion of study in Kent place-names, and support for the Editor of the Kent Place-Names Survey. The current Editor, Dr Paul Cullen, works for the Family Names of the U.K. Project at UWE Bristol. This year, Dr Cullen gives a paper from each of his fields of expertise, one on place-names (Kent Field Names) and one on personal names (Relationship Surnames). Speakers from linguistic and historical disciplines complement these two core papers: Dr Mike Bintley of Canterbury Christ Church University on wics and burhs in Old English poetry; Dr Harry Parkin of UWE Bristol, on Surnames of the Cotswolds 14th to 16th centuries: a model for Kent; and Ms Elizabeth Finn, of the Kent History and Library Centre, with a paper on the Kent Manorial Documents Project.
