Mastering Number and the Four Operations

A day workshop to explore teaching approaches to promote mastery of number including the important ideas of zero, place value, and addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

We will consider how to help children to reason with number, making use of connections and inverse relationships. This will include considering:

- The meaning of mastery
- The use of manipulatives and pictures
- Variation in the way ideas are presented to children
- The use of the NCETM Teaching for Mastery materials
- How to use variation or intelligent practice to help children to understand number

We have timed this workshop so that it falls within the PGCE final placement to help school release a member of staff. Ideas for all year groups from Years 1 to 6 will be covered. The workshop is designed for mathematics subject leaders or teachers who are willing to share ideas across their school.
