The Canterbury Christ Church University Big Band alongside members of the Orbi Playa Big Band (directed by Steve Waterman) present a programme of classic big band and jazz repertoire. Alongside well-known pieces such as Intermission Riff by Stan Kenton and Benny Golson's Killer Joe, there will also be performances from the ground-breaking collaboration between Miles Davis and Gil Evans - Birth of the Cool - featuring the many talented jazz soloists from within the band.

All the concerts feature introductory ‘listening guides’ prepared by the performers and will be followed by a brief opportunity to discuss the work afterwards.

All of our lunchtime events begin at 1pm and are free entry.

All events will be live streamed via Microsoft Teams here. Please note that this link is different to the one originally sent out. We will have contacted all ticket holders with the new access link.

Tickets to the event are free, but when you book you have the option to pay a £3 donation to the Student Scholarship Fund.

The Student Scholarship Fund exists to support those students who would like to take advantage of an opportunity to extend and enrich their studies in some way but lack the resources. For example, the Fund would support the study of a second instrument (or voice); a masterclass off-campus; a summer school residency; or the purchase of specialist equipment or software.

In February 2019 Steve had the first performance of his Concerto for Jazz Trumpet and Orchestra with the Surrey Mozart Players at the Electric Theatre in Guildford. He is also professor of Jazz Trumpet at Trinity College of Music in London, visiting Jazz Trumpet specialist at The Royal Northern College of Music, Royal Welsh College of Music, Canterbury Christ Church University and The Purcell School. Steve also teaches on many summer jazz courses and has conducted numerous Trumpet master classes and workshops from small groups to big bands throughout the UK, Spain, Finland, Latvia, Germany, Peru, U.S.A, Russia, South Africa, and Cuba.
