This workshop will explore how children interpret and understand animated images, and how they might use them to formulate their ideas around animated characters as visual information. We will learn about what elements of design contribute to the formation of 'good' and 'bad' animated characters (comparing two characters - Jafar and the Sultan - from Disney's Aladdin), and then formulating a list of qualities associated with positive and negative characters. We will ask how the animators communicate the personalities of their characters. Participants will then get the chance to put these qualities of design into practice, as they will have the opportunity to 'theme' a minion according to particular topics (Christmas; Halloween; winter, summer; pirate - whatever they think of!). We will think about how we can use the characteristics we’ve listed as a way of changing how a minion can look, and with it what kind of character can be created.
