Discover the history of cabinets of curiosity from the 16th century Kunstkammer of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II to Sir Hans Sloane’s Museum and Tradescant’s Ark. Discover what they were, why they were created and their importance historically and today. Find out about Canon John Bargrave’s cabinets at Canterbury Cathedral and some strange items from around the globe that were included in Canterbury’s first museum in 1825. Explore the resurgence of cabinets of curiosity in contemporary culture and among artists today, including Pinterest and YouTube as modern day Wunderkammern.

Have fun curating your own themed mini cabinets for other course participants to explore using containers and artefacts supplied.
