AROUND THE PIANO; AROUND THE WORLD

Saturday 17 March 2018|10am-4pm

Tutor: John Hursey | Canterbury campus | £39

A day to enjoy this mechanical instrument whose expressive range is greater than any other single one. First to Vienna where Mozart and Beethoven created their great piano concertos still loved the world over, and hearing Schubert as he explores some of his many songs with their marvellous piano accompaniments. Then to London 50 years later to a Victorian musical evening where all classes of people brought pianos to sing, play – and flirt around! A different style in New York another fifty years later for Gershwin’s Jazz piano. Finally, homage to two piano composers: Chopin from Poland, and Rachmaninov from Russia whose unique creativity was inspired by the instrument.
