Introduction to American Cinema

This course will provide an introduction to the work of various filmmakers, studios and genres of American Cinema. This course will cover five sections, with each section consisting of a two hour lecture, and then on the following week a screening and discussion. Topics covered will include:

• The émigré directors – a look at the areas of filmmakers such as Hurwtiz and Wilder who moved to Hollywood to escape the Nazis, and their influence.
• The American New Wave – a study of the New-Wave filmmakers, and how they managed to create a new style of filmmaking from within Hollywood.
• Road and Town Movies – an analysis of American Journeys and depictions of the small town in American film.
• Sundance and Indiewood – the influence of the Sundance film festival on American Independent Cinema.
• The Studio System: how Hollywood functioned in its “Golden Age” and how it continues to change into the twenty first century.
